The eye Vol 1 Vegetative physiology and biochemistry

Historical Significance: This was a most important book in that it assembled current knowledge of the eye and visual function in a series of volumes within which chapters were written by the leading vision researchers of the mid 20th C. Its style was to report the experimental evidence rather than give an overview, text book style, of current viewpoints. It was long used in the optometry course at the University of Melbourne and very much influenced students attitudes of the day to evidence, its interpretation and its uncertainities. It remains a wonderful source book of vision research. The volumes were: Volume 1 Vegetative physiology and biochemistry 1962, Volume 1A vegetative physiology and biochemistry 1984, Volume 2 The Visual Process 1962, Volume 2A Visual Function in Man 1976, Volume 2B The Photobiology of Vision 1977, Volume 3 Muscular Mechanisms 1969, Volume 4 Visual optics and the optical space sense 1962, and Volume 5 Comparative physiology 1974. Hugh Davson (1909- 1996) was a English physiologist who worked at University College London and wrote other text books on the eye (See Cat # 587)
