Historical Significance: Gustavus Hartridge also wrote 'The ophthalmoscope: a manual for students' 1919 . He was a prominent ophthalmic surgeon in London. He is to be distinguished from Hamilton Hartridge FRS (1886-1976), a famous eye physiologist, but the two are related. Gustavus was Hamilton Hartridge's father's cousin and is said to have encouraged Hamilton's interest in the eye. This book was first published in 1884 and ran for many editions the last being the 16th ed 1919
