Historical Significance: This is one of several monographs by Sorsby published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office on the nature of refractive errors, which were influential in the 20thC debate on the origin and components of refractive errors. See list next paragraph and also Cat No 620 and 1144. Arnold Sorsby (1900-1980) was Research Professor in Ophthalmology University of London from 1943. He was prolific writer publishing 'Tenements of clay : an anthology of medical biographical essays' 1975, 'Clinical genetics.' 1953, 'Modern ophthalmology.' 1972, 'Systemic ophthalmology' 1951, 'Diseases of the fundus oculi '1975, 'Genetics in ophthalmology' 1951, 'The incidence and causes of blindess in England and Wales', 1948-1962 1962, 'Medicine and mankind.' 1941, 'A longitudinal study of refraction and its components during growth.' 1970, 'Refraction and its componments during the growth of the eye from the age of three.' 1961, 'A longitudinal study of refraction and its components during growth.' 1970, 'Refraction and its components in twins.' 1962, 'Modern trends in ophthalmology.' 1955, 'On the nature of Milton's blindness.' 1930, 'Blindness in England.' 1951-1954 and 1956, among others. He was also a prolific author of research articles with over 100 listed on PubMed. His interests were refractive errors, blindness and genetics. Named after him are Sorsby' syndrome, Sorsby's macular degeneration and Sorsby's fundus dystrophy (Pictured)
