Historical Significance: In the 1970s optometrists were increasingly being asked to certify the visual fitness of patients for particular occupations or being asked about this by the patients who were contemplating entry to particular occupations. There was a need for a reference manual of vision standards. This was compiled by optometrist Judy Steward (now Orenstein) at the request of the Victorian Division of the AOA under the guidance of the Victorian College of Optometry. The College printed the manual in both its draft and final form.
