Description Of Item: Four ledger books, three foolscap size and one quarto size, containing hand written notes of patient examinations and treatments made by Melbourne optometrist Ernst Goetz in the period 1926 to 1967. Catalogued as 870 A, B, C and D
Historical Significance: Ernst Goetz (1903-1979) was a Melbourne optometrist born in Hemishofen at the Swiss -German border in the canton of Aschaffhausen. He was trained at the Optiker school in Jena, the home town of Zeiss. He migrated to Australia and practised in the practice of Alfred Nott in Collins Street, Melbourne. He was a pioneer in both contact lenses and low vision. He fitted Zeiss glass contact lenses in 1930 ( see 870 D) and fitted telescopic spectacles (probably Zeiss) in 1926 (see 870 A).
