Historical Significance: Joseph Ringland Anderson (1894-1961) was an eminent Melbourne ophthalmologist, who was instrumental in the establishment of the first chair of ophthalmology in Australia at the University of Melbourne and after whom that chair is named. It was established in 1958 and filled in 1963 by Gerard Crock (1929-2007). Anderson was born in Lilydale, Victoria, educated at Scotch College and obtained his MBBS at Melbourne University in 1916. He studied ophthalmology in the UK obtaining his FRCS in 1919 and worked with Parsons at Moorfields Hospital London. On return to Melbourne he was appointed ophthalmic surgeon at the Alfred Hospital in 1923. He also obtained his FRACS in 1930 and his MD in 1932, the work for which is the foundation of this book. This book is regarded as sound (see Anderson's obituary Br J Ophthalmol. 1961 September; 45(9): 639-640) but eclipsed by the work of Jules Gonin Le decollement de la retine. Pathogenie, traitement. Lausanne, Librairie Payot & cie., 1934. He also wrote Hydrophthalmia or congenital glaucoma : its causes, treatment, and outlook. Cambridge : Cambridge University Press, 1939; (see Cat No 1751) Ocular vertical deviations. London, British Medical Assn 1947 (See Cat No 1046) and Ocular vertical deviations and the treatment of nystagmus. Philadelphia, Lippincott [1959].
