Historical Significance: This property was bought by the College at the auction. The site comprising 374 to 378 Cardigan Street was purchased in 1956 when Bertram Nathan was Treasurer of the College for 6200 pounds ($12,400). He had in the preceding few years rescued the College from insolvency by obtaining a recurrent government grant. This gave the College sufficient funds to contemplate purchase of the site and ownership of a bullding. The Treasurer later persuaded the Government of Victorai to make a grant of 32,000 pounds ($64,000) to construct a new building on the site occupied by the cottage. This was completed early in 1960. See Cat No 146 for a picture of the site
