Historical Significance: The National Vision Research Institute of Australia (NVRI) was founded by the Victorian College of Optometry to be an autonomous division of the College to pursue full time research into vision and its disorders. It was established on the basis of an appeal for funds to Australian optometrists and Optical Industry conducted from 1968 to 1975. The appeal was run by Dr David Cockburn, Professor Barry Cole and Miss Jean Colledge. It raised sufficient money to enable the purchase of property in Cardigan Street adjoining the College and the construction of a building for the Institute. The Institute was formerly constituted on November 22 1972 and the building was completed in June 1974.
