Historical Significance: Vavilov (1891- 1951) was regarded as 'an outstanding scientist, an organiser of soviet science, a statesman and public figure'. See Optics and Spectroscopy 2002; 92(6). He was a physicist and President of the USSR Academy of Sciences after World War 2 until his death in 1951. He was also a Deputy of the Moscow and Leningrad City Councils and a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Soviet Republic from 1938 to 1946 and a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 1946 to 1951.
