Wendell L. Hughes, MD (1901-1994) was a pioneer in the field of oculoplastic surgery, and is considered the father of oculoplastic surgery. He was instrumental in the development of microneedles and sutures and many surgical techniques. He demonstrated a lifelong commitment to medical education and wrote and lectured extensively here and abroad From 1950 to 1968 he headed the oculoplastic section of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and wrote and edited the Manual of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Hughes was among the founders and first diplomates of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. During his term as President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Wendell L. Hughes Lecture was established in his honor, and it has been presented each year at the annual Academy meeting since 1970.
