Bernarr Macfadden (1868-1955) was an influential exponent of physical culture, a combination of bodybuilding with nutritional and health theories. He additionally founded the long-running magazine publishing company Macfadden Publications. He gets 47,000 hits on Google and has entries in Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia. The picture is of him posing as Michaelangelo's David (but with underpants) taken in 1905. This book had 10 ediitons from 1924 to 1942 and was preceded by 'Strengthening the eyes : a new course in scientific eye training' in 28 lesson published in 1918. This early version had a second edition in the same year in which interestingly the co-author is William Horatio Bates. Was Bates drawn to this subject by Macfadden?
