Description Of Item: Black painted metal instrument mounted on battery handle covered in red hard rubber. Lenses +20 to -20. Imprinted: FINCHAM OPHTHALMO-RETINOSCOPE/ PAT No 331862. L: 24.0cm x W: 4.3 cm. Case (probably not original): Black leather covered case lined with purple velvet & satin. Imprinted: CLEMENT CLARKE/ WIGMORE ST. Case: 27.8 cm x 10.0 cm x 4.8 cm
Historical Significance: EF Fincham (1893 - 1963) FIntPhys FSMC FBOA taught in the optometry course at the Northampton Polytechnic, later City University. He was the inventor of a number instruments including the Fincham Coincidence Optometer (see cat No 629), the Fincham Combined Corneal Microscope and Slit Lamp, the Fincham Ophthalmo-Retinoscope (see cat No 1124), the Fincham Plastic Artifical Eye Fitting Set, the Fincham Photo-Retinoscope, Fincham Sutcliffe Screening Scotometer / Electronic Field-plotting chart and the Fincham Combined Corneal Microscope and Slit Lamp. He also published a number of scholarly papers of accommodation and other subjects. See obituary Br J OphtHalmol 1964; 48: 120. EH Fincham is to be distinguished from his optometrist brother WAH Fincham (1890-1977) who wrote the text book 'Optics', first published in 1934 and ran to 9 editions to 1980.
