Historical Significance: Dr Jack Pettigrew took up appointment as Principal Research Fellow in the NVRI in August 1979 and was Acting Director from 1980, after the Foundation Director Dr Mitchell returned to Dalhousie University, until 1981. He left to take a chair in physiology at the University of Queensland where he established the Centre for Sight, Touch and Hearing and was subsequently elected an FRS. The NVRI is the autonomous research arm of the Victorian College of Optometry
