He was appointed head of the department of optometry at the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1981. He became Dean of the Faculty of Health at the Queensland University of Technology (1990-2010) and then Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). He graduated in optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1970 and after practising optometry for several years took up a French Government Scholarship to do research in France under Professor Yves LeGrand. He then completed a masters degree at the University of Melbourne while working as a research fellow under the supervision of Professor Barry Cole. He was also a senior optometrist in the Clinic of the Victorian College of Optometry.
