Historical Significance: Brian Flynn was a Councillor of the College who had been asked or volunteered to curate the historical artefacts held by the College. He asked Michael Aitken to help him. They were officially recognised in the College Annual Report as Honorary Archivists in 1974. Brian Flynn had qualified as an optometrist at the College in 1950. Michael had qualified in 1959. On Brian Flynn's death, Pamela Sutton became an honorary archivist. Michael Aitken gave many books of historical significance to the College donating over 40 items that he had acquired in the course of his travels overseas and by browsing in Melbourne antiquarian bookshops, The collection of rare and historically interesting books held in the Nathan Library was named the Michael Aitken Collection of Early Ophthalmic Books in 2009 to recognise his then 35 years of service as honorary archivist and his generous donations to both the collection and to the College Museum.
