He completed his optometry course in 1980 did his PhD in optometry at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor Cole, completing it in 1985. He did a post doc at the Ohio State University working with King-Smith and returned to Melbourne as a lecturer in 1987. He was promoted to Professor in 2007. He is a highly respected clinician and clinical teacher and a very productive researcher working in colour vision, visual ergonomics and later in nutrition and the development of the eye.
