Historical Significance: Ernest Jabara FSMC was one of the 5 people who signed the Articles of Association of the Australian College of optometry in 1939. He was a foundation member of the College Council and first Vice President (and Chairman) 1939 to 1942. The portrait was commissioned by the University of Melbourne which received the donation from Mrs Jabara. Originally the donation was for a small scholarship but Mrs Jabara was asked to agree to the donation being used to commission the portrait of her husband. The painting was done posthumously and there were limited photographs available. Mrs Jabara and her daughter directed he be painted as a relatively young man. The only photograph to which the College had access is that reproduced on p13 of the 49th annual report See Cat No 374 for the photo757 kb image in Museum iPhoto
