It was intended as a succinct set of guidelines for the diagnosis of the commonly occurring disorders of binocular vision. The process was undertaken because of divisions in the profession about the diagnosis and treatment of perceptual disorders and visual training as advocated by those optometrists who identified themselves as 'Behavioural optometrists' . The goal was to find common ground (of which there was a lot) between behavioural optometrists and those who were sceptical of their views and to challenge the behavioural optometrists to clearly document their views.
