He was a distinguished clinical teacher and researcher for over 30 years and was a central figure in the fund raising that enabled the NRVI to be established. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Melbourne, the first awarded to an optometrist by the University, and he is depicted in the painting wearing the robes of this degree. The various symbols in the painting signify his interests including that of sailing and navigation. There is a photograph of the portrait in Photo Album 1 Archive Office West wall and also a photograph of it with the artist.
