Historical Significance: The Optometry Council of Australa and New Zealand was established in 1996 by the State Optometrists Registration Boards to examine overseas qualified optometrists and to accredit Australian and New Zealand optometry courses. The first course to be accredited, in 1999, was the University of Melbourne course and this was the documentation submitted by the University of Melbourne to OCANZ. The documentation prepared by Professor Cole in 1998 gives a detailed account of the standard of education in optometry at that time. Professor Cole was Head of the Department at the time and prepared the documentation although he was succeeded by Profesor Neville McBrien in 1999, the year in which the accreditation was conducted.
