Historical Significance: Dr Edgar Tillyer, after whom the Tillyer lens was named, was an optical scientist at the American Optical company in the USA. He designed the Tillyer lens which corrected astigmatic errors of oblique angles of view. He was a renowned opticist and the Optical Society named a medal in his honour that recocognises distinguished achievments in the field of vision science
