Historical Significance: This symposium was organised for the dedication of the new College of Optometry building in the University of Houston and it is also dedicated to Chester H Pheiffer OD PhD, the Dean of the College for 17 years. It is of interest also because it contains papers by a number of luminaries in the worlds of vision science and optometry, notably Ragnar Granit, Michel Milodot, Richard Hill, Yves LeGrand, Theodore Grosvenor (on soft contact lenses), WAH Rushton, HG Sperling, Robert Boynton, David MacAdam, EF McNicholl (on microspectophotometry of cones), Horace Barlow, Glenn Fry, Richard Blackwell, Jack Pettigrew FRS, Peter Bishop (the latter two from Australia), Russell DeValois, GS Brindley, Collin Blakemore FRS and Howard Bartley.
