Historical Significance: This is a report of an evaluation of an automated perimeter that was designed and made in Australia. It reports that the Opticom is faster and more efficient than the Humphrey automated perimeter. The perimeter was the first produced by Medmont in December 1988. Medmont is an ophthalmic instrument company located in Melbourne, Although named the Opticom in this report, this name was changed to Medmont because of a challenge over the rights to the name The first author, Dr Vingrys, was an airline pilot who lost vision in one eye and had to choose a new career. He completed his optometry course in 1980 did his PhD in optometry at the University of Melbourne under the supervision of Professor Cole, completing it in 1985. He did a post doc at the Ohio State University working with King-Smith and returned to Melbourne as a lecturer in 1987. He was promoted to Professor in 2007. He is a highly respected clinician and clinical teacher and a very productive researcher working in colour vision, visual ergonomics and later in nutrition and the development of the eye. He worked closely with Medmont in the devopment of the perimerter and its subsequent improvments. Dr Helfrich is a USA qualified optometrist who worked in the clinic of the College for many years and subsequently settled in Australia
