Description Of Item: Instruction Manual for Takagi Javal Schiotz keratometer (ophthalmometer). 8 pages. 255mm x 180mm. The instrument itself is held by the Kett Museum. See Catalogue No 1106
Historical Significance: The Javal Schiotz type keratometer (or ophthalmometer) uses two self illuminated mires, one a red square, the other a green staircase design, to determine the radius of curvature of the cornea. It uses a variable image size and two positions to measure corneal curvature, whereas Bausch & Lomb type keratometers use a fixed object size and measures from one position. In 1881, Louis Emile Javal (1839-1907) & Hjalmar August Schiotz (1850-1927) first detailed their ophthalmometer in "Un opthalmometre pratique", in Annales d'Oculistique, Paris 1881, 86:5-21.
