Description Of Item: Original blue cloth, xxiv preliminaries + 2 unnumbered, 2097-3470 numbered pages, 1140 illustrations including 164 in colour. Ownership certificate of Victor Simon on front paste down.
Historical Significance: This is the 1947 reprint of the 1st edition of volume 3 of the 7 volume classic text book written by Sir Stewart Duke-Elder MA DSc PhD MD ChB FRCS (1899-1978). The original edition was published in 1940. Duke-Elder was a Scot and a prolific writer and editor, producing seven volumes of Textbook of Ophthalmology and fifteen volumes of its successor, System of Ophthalmology, along with many other textbooks and scientific papers. He served for many years as editor of Brit J Ophthal and Ophthal Lit and was involved in the formation of the Institute of Ophthalmology in London. He was elected FRS and he was knighted in 1933. He was Surgeon-Oculist to King Edward VIII, George V and Queen Elizabeth II. This book is an excellent source of historical notes.
