Description Of Item: Original blue cloth, xxv preliminaries + 5 unnumbered, pages 1127 - 2094, 1140 illustrations including 164 in colour. Handwritten name of former owner 'Archie Anderson 32 Collins St 15/2/38' and the price 4 pounds and 4 shillings.
Historical Significance: Sir Stewart Duke-Elder MA DSc PhD MD ChB FRCS (1899-1978), a Scot, was a prolific writer and editor, producing seven volumes of Textbook of Ophthalmology and fifteen volumes of its successor, System of Ophthalmology, along with many other textbooks and scientific papers. He served for many years as editor of Brit J Ophthal and Ophthal Lit and was involved in the formation of the Institute of Ophthalmology in London. He was elected FRS and he was knighted in 1933. He was Surgeon-Oculist to King Edward VIII, George V and Queen Elizabeth II. This book is an excellent source of historical notes.The previous owner Archibald (Archie) Simpson Anderson (1895-1974) was a prominent Melbourne ophthalmologist (see his obituary Brit J Ophthal 1975; 59:173).
