Historical Significance: Pen Thomas was one of the founders of the Contact Lens Society of Australia and one of the leaders in the field of contact lenses in the 1940s to the late 1970s. Ken Bell ASTC graduated in optometry from the Sydney Technical College in 1952 and became Honorary Secretary of the Contact Lens Society of Australia in 1969 and served in that role with great distinction until 2009. Penhryn Thomas BSc Opt Sc FAAO FIO (1918-2010) was a Sydney optometrist, who qualified in optometry at the Sydney Technical College in 1939 and was one of the pioneers of contact lens practice in Australia. He fitted haptic contact lenses in the 1940s. Later, he designed, produced and marketed his own corneal contact lens designs and taught many optometrists how to fit contact lenses in the 1950s to the 1970s.
