Refraction of the eye. A manual for students

Historical Significance: Gustavus Hartridge FRCS (1849-1923) was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and surgeon to a number of London hospitals. This book was written to help (medical?) students diagnose refractive errors and prescribe glasses. Gustavus Hartridge also wrote 'The ophthalmoscope: a manual for students' 1919 . He was a prominent ophthalmic surgeon in London. He is to be distinguished from Hamilton Hartridge FRS (1886-1976), a famous eye physiologist, but the two are related. Gustavus was Hamilton Hartridge's father's cousin and is said to have encouraged Hamilton's interest in the eye. This book was first published in 1884 and ran for many editions the last being the 16th ed 1919. This is the 9th edition. The archive also holds the 10th (1900), 14th (1907) and 16th (1919) editions. Of particular interest is that the appendix contains several pages and illustrations of Culbertson's prisoptometer. The museum hold two examples of this optometer (Cat No 202 and 1177).
